Every Discovery Begins with an Observation
Many of the greatest discoveries in science did not begin with complicated equipment or advanced mathematics. They began when someone noticed something that did not fit their expectations.
An observation raises a question. A question leads to an investigation. An investigation can lead to a discovery.
One beautiful example comes from the Danish astronomer Ole Rømer.
Rømer carefully observed the eclipses of Jupiter's moon Io. By recording when the moon disappeared behind Jupiter and reappeared, he determined its orbital period and began predicting future eclipses. But he noticed something unexpected. At certain times of the year, the eclipses occurred a little earlier than predicted, while at other times they occurred a little later.
Instead of dismissing these differences as errors, Rømer searched for an explanation. He realized that the Earth is sometimes closer to Jupiter and sometimes farther away during its orbit around the Sun. Light therefore has to travel different distances before reaching Earth. The changing arrival time of light explained the apparent advance and delay of the eclipses.
From a simple observation came one of the first convincing demonstrations that light travels at a finite speed, not instantaneously.
Your observation does not have to change science overnight. A shadow that changes during the day, an unusual pattern in the clouds, the motion of a pendulum, the way water flows, or something unexpected during an experiment can all become the starting point of an investigation.
